Dr. Robert Nagel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering at James Madison University. Since joining JMU, Nagel has helped to develop the Department’s six course engineering design sequence, and currently, he is lead instructor of the two-course, client-based sophomore design experience where students design and construct human-powered vehicles for individuals with cerebral palsy. Nagel is also the co-developer and co-instructor of the Innovation Exchange, an experiential learning course with a significant travel component that injects students in the startup culture of the Silicon Valley to meet innovators, entrepreneurs, and investors. Nagel’s research interests are in the areas engineering design and design education. Currently, Nagel is investigating the impact of functional modeling on students’ ability to understand, represent, and design systems as well as studying the impact of student engagement in University MakerSpaces on students’ design self-efficacy and student retention.
